Some of Swaziland representatives
at EEASA 2002 |
The 20th annual conference
was held in Gaberone, Botswana from the 19th to the 21st August 2002. The
theme for this year’s conference was "Environmental Education processes
for Sustainable development." Over 250 participants attended the workshop
hosted by Kalahari Conservation Society. |
The delegates were from Angola,
Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and
Zimbabwe. Yonge Nawe facilitated the attendance of five primary and high
school teachers. EEASA was held just a week before the WSSD that was held
in Johannesburg. The range of topics discussed include among others socio-ecological
issues, curriculum development, culture and indigenous knowledge systems,
financing environmental education, business and industry, environmental
education policy processes, media and communication, and learning support
materials. Recommendations were made to resolve these issues and a declaration
was made for the WSSD. A working document called the Gaberone declaration
was produced at EEASA 2002. This document is for use at WSSD and will also
be used as a guideline for EEASA. The Gaberone declaration is available
on the EEASA website (www.info-net/eeasa)
The 2003 EEASA will be held
in Namibia. People who wish to participate should contact Yonge Nawe.
