Environmental Education

The importance of Environmental Education

You may often have heard people saying, "We must protect the environment." Your environment is all of the living and non-living things that you come into contact with. You are also part of the environment. Environmental education is thus seen as an important step towards protecting our one and only planet.

Environmental Education (EE) and awareness raising are one of the most pressing issues facing the youth and our future generations.

What do we mean about environmental education?

Environmental Education (EE) is a process in which individuals gain awareness of their environment and acquire knowledge, skills, values, experiences, and determination. This enables individuals to act individually and collectively to solve present and future environmental problems.

Environmental education is a learning process that increases people’s knowledge and awareness about the environment and associated challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to make informed decisions and take responsible action.

The components of environmental education are:

  • Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges
  • Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental challenges
  •  Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental quality
  • Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges
  •  Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges
Environmental Education has always been with us. People have always lived symbiotically with nature, and built stories, religions and cultures around nature and the local environment. As a result of urbanisation and globalisation, many of us have forgotten how our ancestors preserved our natural resources. We need to be reminded that we only have one Earth in which to live in. Let us preserve our environment and lobby that the government of Swaziland introduces EE in the school curricula.
