I hope you had enjoyable holidays and compliments for the new year!!. 

This corner is for you to exchange environment and development challenges in your communities with other members. We are encouraging you to submit 1-2 A4 size pages articles with pictures, cartoons etc. The best article will be published in subsequent issues. The deadline for your submissions for the next issue is 30 May 2003.

HOW ENVIRONMENTALLY AWARE ARE PEOPLE IN MY COMMUNITY?

This survey can be best done through a questionnaire and/or interview, most likely in siswati. First identify the main environmental problems in your community. The questions below are a simply a guideline. Add more questions or make changes if required.

Soil Erosion

1. What is soil erosion?
2. Does soil erosion take place in your community? If so where?
3. What causes soil erosion in your community?
4. What should you do about this?

Water Pollution

5. Where do you get your drinking water?
6. Did you ever get sick from drinking water? Do you think this water is safe to drink?
7. If the water is not safe to drink, what can be the cause of that?
8. What should you do about this?

Solid Waste

9. Where do you leave your household rubbish?
10. Is it a problem to get rid of waste?
11. Do you ever throw rubbish in the environment (e.g. plastic bags, cans, bottles, etc.)
12. Do you think this is bad thing to do? Why?
13. What should you do to keep your community clean?

Conservation

14. Should you protect wild animals and plants living in the surroundings of your community?
15. If so what should you do about this?
16. Should hunting be allowed in the surroundings of our community? If so why?
